NFL Star Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail for DUI Accident That Killed Pedestrian

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Donte' Stallworth was sentenced to just 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter.

Stallworth, who began his 30-day sentence last Tuesday, took full responsibility for killing a pedestrian, 59-year-old Mario Reyes, while driving under the influence in Miami Beach.

According to police record, Stallworth had a BAC of .126, much higher than the legal limit of .08 percent.  He was also driving around 50 mph in a 40 mph zone when he struck Reyes.

Stallworth originally faced 15 years in prison, but was only sentenced to 30 days after reaching a plea deal.  In addition, Stallworth must also serve two years of house arrest and eight years probation.  He will also permanently lose his driver's license and must undergo drug and alcohol testing and perform 1,000 hours of community service.  According to Christopher Lyons, Stallworth's attorney, Stallworth could win approval for a restricted license after five years.

Stallworth also said he plans to get involved with anti-drunk driving education programs.

Stallworth has also reached a confidential financial settlement with Reyes' family to avoid a potential lawsuit. According to the family's attorney, they just want to "bring closure to this emotional and tragic event."

According to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Stallworth's lack of any criminal history, his cooperation with police, and his willingness to accept responsibility were all factors that led to the plea bargain.  Rundle also said that Reyes' family, in particular his 15-year-old daughter, wanted the case to be resolved to avoid any additional pain.

Although the NFL said it plans to review the matter for disciplinary action, Lyons said the plea agreement will allow Stallworth to resume his football career.
