Police Chase Ends in Crash of Stolen Car

By Prime & O’Brien LLP  Sep. 9, 2013 4:00p

Police officers in Long Island took the driver of a car into custody recently after determining that the vehicle had been reported stolen. The incident began around 10:00 at night when officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle on Sunrise Highway. Police observed the sedan speeding and proceeded to pull the vehicle over. The driver initially complied and stopped the car on a service road off of westbound lanes. Officers ran the license plate on the car and discovered that it had recently been reported stolen. At that point, the driver reportedly drove off from police and attempted to elude authorities at speeds surpassing 100 mph at times. The officers continued to pursue the car but lost it in the Deer Park area. Not long after, they came upon the stolen vehicle which had crashed into an SUV. The driver, J.D., was taken into custody while a woman that was in the car with him was transported by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries. No one in the SUV was injured. J.D. has been charged with possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing a police officer and other charges. Have you been accused of a serious theft crime or other offense?
