Case Moves to Tucson After Judge Approves Transfer

Defendant Alleged to Have Assaulted Congressional Representative

22 year old college dropout Jared Lee Loughner, accused of a shooting rampage that killed 6 people and wounded 13 others, has had the court proceedings in his case transferred from Phoenix to Tucson, the location of the alleged attack. The January 8 attack became international news when it was discovered the target was U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, sparking furious debate across the nation.

Some blamed an increase in violent political rhetoric for inspiring the assassination attempt. Though Giffords survived the shooting, several of her staff members, as well as U.S. District Judge John Roll, were slain in the brutal incident. Authorities apprehended Loughner at the scene, shooting him through the head, though not fatally. While he recovers from his injuries in a hospital in Houston, the trial process proceeds through the preliminary stages.

Agreement Between Prosecutors and Defense Attorneys Relocates Trial

The judge presiding over the case, District Court Judge Larry Burns, took over after multiple Arizona justices recused themselves, saying they could not be impartial with a colleague and friend as one of the victims. He allowed the proceedings to move to Tucson, where the shooting took place, though he said the defendant maintained the right to change location in the future if he wishes. Loughner has pleaded not guilty to his charges. He currently faces up to life in prison if convicted of the attempted killing of Giffords, and a maximum of 20 years in prison for the other murders.
