Cyber Crimes Against Children

By The Martinez Law Firm  Jan. 8, 2011 4:59p

In today's internet age, more children have access to the internet than ever before. Each year these children get younger as their computer skills get stronger. Unfortunately, sexual predators are using the internet in order to lure unsuspecting victims, and many times, those victims are children. As a reaction to the increase of internet crimes against minors, the Attorney General Greg Abbott established a Cyber Crimes Unit in 2003. This unit was designed to take the initiative in seeking out and arresting child predators who use the internet and technology in order to commit crimes against children.

The Cyber Crimes Unit works with the public and private sector which are focused on the detection and exploitation of children including the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Houston Area Cyber Crime Task Force and other internet task forces nationwide who are also dedicated to helping exploited children.

Part of the investigative strategies of the unit involves law enforcement officers going under cover and posing as children in both internet chat rooms and other social networking sites. In addition, law enforcement officers use a variety of means which help them to investigate and detect individuals who create, share and distribute images of children that are sexually exploitive or violent. These efforts have resulted in over one hundred arrests and more than 80 convictions of individuals who were found guilty of possession of child pornography.
