Police Continue To Crack Down On DUI Over The Labor Day Weekend

Today, the Mercury News reported that 37 people were arrested for DUI over the Labor Day weekend in Reno, Nevada.

On August 15th, a region-wide enforcement campaign began by Reno police.  The police state that the campaign, "involved in five nights of saturation patrols, including two over the holiday weekend." The intensive campaign was supported by a grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety and was created to crack down on drunk drivers.

It is a known fact that instances of DUI tend to escalate during holidays, especially Labor Day weekend.  This has led to police departments across the country taking extra measures to ensure that DUI offenders are caught and that DUI related accidents are kept to a minimum.

For those who are caught driving under the influence, it is important to know that the DUI laws in every state have become increasingly strict, and that more and more first time offenders are facing DUI penalties like jail time and substantial fines.  For example, in the state of California, convicted first time DUI offenders face:  3-5 years probation, $1,400 - $1,600 fines, 6 months driver's license suspension, 12 hours of DUI School and 48 hours of jail time or more.

With the DUI/DWI laws being so harsh in all states, people should definitely think twice before they step into their vehicles after drinking.
